How to Human: Building Conflict Skills to Improve Relationships
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm (CDT)

Register: https://foriowa.info/3TBA26Y

Conflict is a normal but often uncomfortable part of all relationships. Many people would rather avoid conflict for fear of damaging a relationship or to avoid the discomfort that comes with having difficult conversations. And yet, working through conflict is key to building more satisfying relationships in both our personal and professional relationships, as healthy conflict can help us learn about ourselves and others.

Join Rachel McLaren, an associate professor in the University of Iowa Department of Communication Studies, for an engaging workshop on building conflict skills. She will share research-based information about the common barriers to healthy conflict, as well as scripts and tips for how to confidently handle hard conversations with others.

About Student Impact Grants

CLIMATE through a Wide Lens
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm (CDT)
Where: 21 North Clinton Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Rising seas, toxic rivers, deforestation, smoke-filled air-headlines remind us daily of the local, national, and international impacts of climate change. Join us for a wild pecha kucha ride through the effects of climate change with researchers who also tirelessly seek solutions. World-renowned climate scientist, Jerald Schnoor will open with big picture issues. That will set the stage for artist Isabel Barbuzza´s work on South American lithium salt mines, environmental literary scholar Eric Gidal´s work on Iowa´s watersheds, feminist anthropologist Meena Khandelwal´s engagement with Rajasthani villages in India, and natural resource economist Silvia Secchi´s rooting into the farms and rivers that surround us. Together, our Wide Lens presenters offer crucial insights into the challenges we face and hope that if we work together, change is possible.

Presentations:

  • "Visualizing Climate Dangers-The Case of Lithium" - Isabel Barbuzza, Art and Art History, CLAS
  • "Connecting Data and Storytelling in Iowa's Watersheds" - Eric Gidal, English, CLAS
  • "Cookstoves and Climate Change in India" - Meena Khandelwal, Anthropology and Gender, Women´s, and Sexuality Studies, CLAS
  • "Climate Change-Where We Are Now" - Jerald Schnoor, College of Engineering
  • "Adapting Agriculture, Land, and Water to Climate Change" - Silvia Secchi, Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, CLAS

20 slides per presenter, 20 seconds per slide

Ruthless Timekeeper - Teresa Mangum, Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, Office of the Vice President for Research

Additional Hosts - Roland Racevskis, Associate Dean for the Arts and Humanities, CLAS; Kristy Nabhan-Warren, Associate Vice President for Research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

For each gathering in the Wide Lens series, researchers, scholars, and artists from across the university briefly present their work on a shared topic of interest; then, we open the floor to questions and conviviality over hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

Wide Lens is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, and the Office of the Vice President for Research. These events are free and open to all.

Psychedelics: From Trip to Treatment | Chat From the Old Cap

Art & Write Night
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (CST)
Where: 39-53 East Jefferson Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Join the long, rich, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.

Professional, aspiring, and amateur artists alike, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History's magical gallery spaces after-hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists.

Tell a friend, grab a notebook, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We'll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we'll always start in the Hageboeck Hall of Birds (Bird Hall) on the third Floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We'll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we've been working on, connecting with others (optional, of course!).

Please note, the Museum is typically closed during this time, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall. Bird Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor and crossing the auditorium to the north side of the building.

University of Iowa podcasters dive into Hawkeye sports, health, and current events.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a financial exigency which threatens our continued ability to adequately support 24 intercollegiate athletics programs at the desired championship level. With the Big Ten Conference's postponement of fall competition on August 11, UI Athletics now projects lost revenue of approximately $100M and an overall deficit between $60-75M this fiscal year. A loss of this magnitude will take years to overcome. We have a plan to recover, but the journey will be challenging. In that context, we are writing today with some extremely difficult news. In consultation with the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, we have made the decision to discontinue four of our varsity sports programs at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year: men's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's tennis. Each of these teams will have the opportunity to compete in their upcoming 2020-21 seasons, should the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 permit, before they are discontinued at the varsity level. Read the full announcement. If you have any questions about your Athletics donation, please call (319) 467-3410 or email?uiowa@foriowa.org.
