Your Hy-Vee is Helping Our Kids!

Give to Iowa Hy-Vee recently gave $500,000 to help build the new University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, a healing environment that will improve the health and well-being of children and their families. To celebrate Hy-Vee’s gift, we took pictures of University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital patients paired with Hy-Vee employees, and gathered their stories about how University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital has influenced their lives. Kitchen, Iowa City Hy-Vee

My family has a personal connection to University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, because my daughter Aubree has received care there since 1997. I love that Hy-Vee gave this gift; it really means a lot. Hy-Vee and University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital have done so much for my family and me. This photo shoot was the best way to say “thank you” from our family to University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital and Hy-Vee.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital Patient: Kira Baldwin, 4 years old, Iowa City.
    Parents: Sheila and Brad Baldwin

As an infant, Kira was hospitalized at University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital for a respiratory infection. We were so impressed with the team that cared for her, from the doctors and nurses to the scheduling staff. We continue to take Kira to University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital for her well-child check-ups, and we feel good that should we ever need further care, we have a terrific children’s health-care facility here in Iowa City.

    Hy-Vee Employee: Brad Waller, Waukee
Assistant Vice President, Community Relations, Hy-Vee Corporate

In 1987, when I was 14 years old, I spent six weeks as a patient at UI Hospitals and Clinics. I was involved in an automobile accident, sustaining a permanent spinal cord injury and chemical burns (gasoline). While I was a patient at the UI Hospitals and Clinics, I was treated in the Burn Unit, and underwent back surgery and the first stages of rehabilitation. I think it's a strong reflection on the staff that my family and I can look back on our experience with so many positive memories despite it being such a devastating and life-changing event. It's testament to their skillful service, their expertise, and especially their enduring culture of caring and compassion.

I’m blessed to work for an organization that so strongly believes in giving back to the communities that we serve. In the big picture, this is one of countless charitable missions supported by Hy-Vee, but obviously our commitment to University of Iowa Children's Hospital is close to my heart, and I'm very grateful to Hy-Vee for stepping up.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital Patient: Paetra Sauer, 5 years old, Shell Rock.
    Parents: Fritz and Charlene Sauer

The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital is our daughter’s “club!” She sees many different specialty doctors for symptoms that do not have a formal diagnosis – she’s a genetic mystery. We don’t necessarily have a go-to support group or a cheat sheet of what the future will bring, but we do have many different doctors and nurses working together and problem solving to make our daughter’s life a better one.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital is a top-ranked hospital in many disciplines. This is incredibly important for us to have experts close to home so that Paetra can have a high quality of life and so we can limit the amount of time that she spends on the road traveling to and from appointments. Thank you, Hy-Vee, for believing that our children need a facility that matches the quality of care that is already being given. Children are completely dependent upon us to give them access to the best possible health care, and with your gift, you are stating how important it is for children in Iowa (and really, globally) to have the best health care in our state.
    - Charlene Sauer

Hy-Vee Employee: Jan Nichols, North Liberty
Manager of Perishables, Iowa City Hy-Vee

My daughter spent five days in the NICU after being born in February 2013. The experienced nurses and staff were so wonderful and I made a personal connection with many of them. I hold a special place in my heart for University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. I’m thankful to work for such a great company that understands the importance of helping our communities.

Lincoln couldn’t have been a better partner in crime. He was so cute and very alert through the whole photo shoot. It was a lot of fun to giggle and take photos with this adorable little boy.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital Patient: Lincoln Cable, 11 months, Cedar Rapids.
    Parents: Brendon and Necia Cable

Lincoln was diagnosed in utero with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. He was born at UI Hospitals and Clinics and was able to receive important care right at birth. He now receives all of his continuous care there. University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital has the best doctors, surgeons, nurses, and the best supporting staff.

We always strive to be a voice for Lincoln and spread awareness for congenital heart defects and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It’s also important to share how strongly we feel about everyone who has cared for our son at University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Thank you, Hy-Vee, for providing University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital with the tools they need to provide amazing care. We wouldn’t have this amazing little boy without them.

Hy-Vee Employee: Hilary Jensen, Iowa City
    Human Resource Manager, Coralville Hy-Vee

I have worked at Hy-Vee for 15 years, and I’m so thrilled to be able to work for a company that can give back like this. I love when we can give back to our community.

I felt so honored when I was asked to be a part of this campaign. It’s a great way for us to show University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital that we’re here for them. Kelby was so fun to work with. After a little bit we were goofing around and having a blast. It was so rewarding to see a kid who benefits from University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital’s expertise.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital Patient: Kelby Telander, 11 years old, North Liberty.
    Parents: Tina and Neil Telander

At 21 months, we learned that Kelby’s hearing was severely impaired. We brought him immediately to University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, where he was diagnosed with vestibular aqueduct syndrome, which caused his hearing to come and go. He underwent surgery and received a cochlear implant, and his hearing was truly reborn. University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital has been there for us on and off the clock. They understand that, when you are dealing with your child, nothing can stand in the way. We are blessed to be located next to one of the best hospitals in the nation for otolaryngology and cochlear implants, not to mention their world-renowned surgeons.

I think it’s wonderful that Hy-Vee is able to donate to help University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital build a state-of-the-art children’s hospital! The hospital is bringing everyone together under one roof, tightly knit for the maximum best care. It will improve the health and well-being of the children and their families, similar to Hy-Vee’s health and wellness initiative. We strive to make lives easier, healthier and happier.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital Patient: Sasha Baldwin, 6 years old, Iowa City.
    Parents: Sheila and Brad Baldwin

Sasha has visited University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital regularly since birth for her well-child checkups. We also have visited off and on for the normal bumps and bruises of childhood. We are so thankful for the terrific care that is available to our family, right here in our backyard.

  • Hy-Vee Employee: John Wombacher,
    Produce Manager, Iowa City Hy-Vee

I think this is a wonderful gift. University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital is important to our community and to the entire Midwest. I have been with Hy-Vee for 30 years; representing Hy-Vee in this campaign has definitely been one of the highlights of my career. It was a great experience to meet Hailey, who will benefit from Hy-Vee’s gift.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital Patient: Hailey Ellick, 4 years old, Tiffin.
Parents: Ingrid Cobb-Ellick and Michael Ellick

Hailey was born at UI Hospitals and Clinics, and at three years old, she was tested and diagnosed at University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital with a mild form of autism. She continues to go to University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital's Center for Disabilities and Development. The hospital is wonderful and it is a blessing that we have such caring and helping people who care for and love all children no matter who they are or where they come from. Thank you, Hy-Vee, for this precious, generous gift that will help more children as well as our own.
    - Ingrid Cobb-Ellick
