Captain Charles N. G. Hendrix Scholarship
A mother and daughter teamed up to create a scholarship to help UI students and pay tribute to a family member.
The Captain Charles N. G. Hendrix Scholarship is awarded to a first-year medical student at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. The scholarship was established by Jessie M. Hendrix and Mary J. C. Hendrix in memory of Captain Charles N. G. Hendrix, Jessie’s spouse and Mary’s father, who had a successful career in the U.S. Navy.
Mary J. C. Hendrix is president and scientific director of the Children’s Memorial Research Center in Chicago, Illinois. She was formerly professor and head of the Department of Anatomy at the Cell Biology at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and associate director of basic science research and deputy director at the Holden Cancer Center.
She and her mother, Jessie Hendrix, recognize the challenges facing today’s medical students. Jessie helped establish the fund to support the UI and show her commitment to the university where her only child was employed.
Their gift was made in connection with the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine’s “Seeking Knowledge for Healing” campaign, a three-year effort to raise $25 million to help construct the Medical Education and Biomedical Research Facility and support endowments for medical scholarships, professorships, and research.
Jessie Hendrix and Mary J. C. Hendrix are members of the Presidents Club, the University of Iowa’s highest honor club for its most generous contributors. Their gift will help relieve the financial burden for medical students and allow them to better focus on their studies.
Congratulations on receiving the Captain Charles N. G. Hendrix Scholarship
