Dr. Richard and Donna McKay Medicine Scholarship
For more than five decades, Dr. Richard “Dick” McKay and Donna McKay contributed to the success of The University of Iowa. Dating back to his time as a UI student on the Hawkeye yearbook staff and her student work with the Union Board, both UI graduates were enthusiastic, unselfish supporters of the University.
More recently, the McKays continued to support the University through their presence at campus events, their support of various University interests, and through their gifts to establish the Dick and Donna McKay Medicine Scholarship Fund.
This fund is part of the Dick and Donna McKay Scholarship Fund, which provides generous awards to various areas of the University, including the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, International Studies, and WSUI. The Medicine Scholarship Fund provides financial aid to students in the UI Carver College of Medicine who are residents of Iowa, with preference given to students who demonstrate both financial need and potential for academic success.
As Iowa students, the McKays were involved in organizations as varied as the Newman Club, the Foreign Language Association, the Seals Swim Team, Phi Kappa Psi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Phi Beta Kappa.
Following graduation, they continued supporting the University from afar, offering their time and gifts even as Donna worked for Adlai Stevenson during the 1956 presidential campaign, and later as Dick’s career in ophthalmology took them to New York, New Hampshire, and eventually back to Iowa. As he built his private practice in Waterloo and she contributed her time to the medical auxiliary, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and the PTA, they continued to contribute to the University of Iowa, serving, among other roles, as class gift chairs.
Dick, who received a B.A. degree in liberal arts and medicine in 1952, and his M.D. in 1956, and Donna, who received her B.A. in 1955, had long been interested in and supportive of the education offered by the University. The McKays had three children and each attended the UI—Tom (1988 M.D.), Peter, and Ann (1988 B.A.).
Later in life, the McKays continued their philanthropic pursuits as members of the UI Alumni Association and The Presidents Club of The University of Iowa (Dick was chair in 1982 and 1983). Dick also served as a lifetime honorary director of the UI Foundation. They were avid supporters of Hancher Auditorium, the performing arts, the Museum of Art, and WSUI, and often attended Hawkeye sporting events.
Congratulations on receiving the Dr. Richard and Donna McKay Medicine Scholarship
