Dr. Samuel and Merrilee Bovenmyer Medical Student Scholarship
The Dr. Samuel and Merrilee Bovenmyer Medical Student Scholarship was established in 2008 as an endowed fund to be used by the Foundation to support one or more annual scholarships to deserving students in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. The student should be an Iowa high school graduate and display financial need.
Dr. Bovenmyer, a native of Ottumwa, Iowa, received his B.A. in General Science in 1960 from the University of Iowa. He graduated from the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in 1963 and interned at Highland Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, California. He went on to do his residency at the UI Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in 1967. He served in the US Army as an ophthalmologist for two years following his residency. One year was spent in Korea. He went on to do private practice in Waterloo, Iowa, for 31 years retiring in 2001. Dr. Bovenmyer’s father graduated from the UI Carver College of Medicine 1926.
Merrilee Bovenmyer is a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Dr. and Mrs. Bovenmyer have a son, James (BSME 1996) and a daughter, Julie (BA-computer science and BFA-graphic design 1999).
Dr. and Mrs. Bovenmyer established the scholarship knowing that medical education expenses have escalated since Dr. Bovenmyer completed medical school. They saw the debt that their daughter-in-law incurred while becoming a physician.
Congratulations on receiving the Dr. Samuel and Merrilee Bovenmyer Medical Student Scholarship
