Dr. Stephen H. and Sue Montgomery Wolken Scholarship
Stephen H. Wolken, M.D., FACS, received his Bachelor of Science degree (1965) and medical school degree (1968) from the University of Iowa. After interning in Seattle and fulfilling a two-year military obligation, he returned to the UI ophthalmology department residency program because it is one of the best. An opening in an Iowa City ophthalmology office, Eye Physicians and Surgeons, LLP, enticed him to remain in Iowa City, a decision he has never regretted.
Dr. Wolken and his wife, Sue Montgomery Wolken (UI B.A. 1966), have three children, Wendy (UI B.A. 1990, Michigan State M.S. 1993), Mark (Stanford B.S. 1992, UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine M.D. 1997 and ophthalmology residency 2000), and Jeffrey (Northwestern University 1994, Syracuse Law School 1998). The Wolkens have appreciated living in Iowa City and enjoying the many benefits of the University of Iowa.
Dr. Wolken has served on the UI Alumni Association Board of Directors and the UI Carver College of Medicine Alumni Society Board of Advisors. He has also served on a bank board and on the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Board of Trustees. Dr. Wolken has also served as president of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Sue worked for Educational Services at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Child Psychiatry. She has been a docent at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and an active member of the Hancher Guild. Sue was a 4-H leader for 15 years.
Dr. and Mrs. Wolken appreciated their outstanding education at the University of Iowa, and it was only natural that they wished to establish a medical school scholarship for a deserving Iowa high school graduate wanting to pursue a medical degree.
Congratulations on receiving the Dr. Stephen H. and Sue Montgomery Wolken Scholarship
