Dr. Walter and Margaret Anneberg Medical Student Scholarship
Dr. Allen Dolliver Anneberg of Carroll, Iowa, and Mary Louise Anneberg Petersen of Harlan, Iowa, have established this medical student scholarship to honor their parents, Dr. Walter Allen Anneberg (1899-1988) and Margaret Dolliver Anneberg (1900-1990).
As a youth from age 14 on, Walter accompanied his older brother, Dr. A. R. Anneberg of Carroll, on house calls—sometimes braving blizzards in a horse-drawn sleigh. He attended his last three years of high school in Carroll and then attended the State University of Iowa in Iowa City receiving his B.S. degree in 1921, and his M.D. degree in pediatrics in 1924. Walter served an internship in pediatrics at the University Children’s Hospital in Iowa City in 1923 and 1924. He was among the first doctors in Iowa to administer insulin to a juvenile diabetic; before that use of insulin, children usually died within a year after contracting the disease. Following his internship, he joined his brother in Carroll in what grew to be the Carroll Medical Center, and he practiced medicine for 52 years in Carroll, delivering more than 7,000 babies in that time, keeping careful records of each one. He served in the U.S. Medical Corps in North Africa and Italy during World War II. At that time, penicillin was an experimental drug that he remembered using where he worked in the 45th General Hospital, and what a difference it made in saving lives.
Margaret Dolliver was the oldest daughter of U.S. Senator Jonathan P. Dolliver of Fort Dodge, Iowa. She graduated from high school in Fort Dodge and attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, for one year before transferring to the State University of Iowa where she graduated in 1922. She taught school in Iowa City from 1922 to 1924. Margaret and Walter were married on June 17, 1923.
The Annebergs were loyal alumni of the University of Iowa and donors and supporters of the UI Alumni Association and the University of Iowa Foundation. To honor their parents’ legacy of generosity, Dr. Allen Anneberg and Mary Louise Petersen established this scholarship.
Congratulations on receiving the Dr. Walter and Margaret Anneberg Medical Student Scholarship
