Gus G. Nopoulos Medical Student Aid Award
This award was established through The University of Iowa Foundation in 1982 with a gift from Gus G. Nopoulos of Wilton, Iowa. The award provides financial assistance to medical students from Muscatine County who are enrolled in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and have achieved good academic standing.
Gus Nopoulos was born March 14, 1891, in Vervena, Greece. In 1910, at the age of 19, he opened a confectionery and restaurant in Wilton, Iowa, called the Candy Kitchen. A local landmark, the family-owned, old-style soda fountain still operates today.
Gus had a strong affection for The University of Iowa. Several generations of his family have attended the University, and Gus worked hard to ensure that many students, especially those from his home county, would have the opportunity to pursue higher education as well. Because of his generosity, he earned the honor of being the 1,500th member of the President’s Club, the University’s highest donor recognition society. Gus Nopoulos died on July 4, 1983.
Congratulations on receiving the Gus G. Nopoulos Medical Student Aid Award
