James R. and Lauri K. Young Scholarship
The life of James R. Young gives new meaning to the phrase “family practice.” The son of Dr. Robert M. Young, formerly of Osage, Iowa, James Young received his M.D. degree from the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in 1970. He specialized in family practice medicine and did an internship at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, New York. Dr. Young then served in the U.S. Navy at Keflavik, Iceland. From 1973 to 1978, he provided patient care through practices in New Hampton, Waverly, and Cedar Falls, Iowa. He is currently a family physician with Iowa Health Physicians in Cedar Falls.
James R. Young and his wife, Laurinda, are the parents of 1999 University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine graduate, Raina L. Young-McGowan, M.D. Dr. Young-McGowan is currently a family practice physician in Minnesota.
Dr. Young understands the need for financial support in pursuing a career in medicine. In 1997 he established the James R. and Lauri K. Young Scholarship Fund through the University of Iowa Foundation to provide support to medical students interested in pursuing a career in primary care (internal medicine, pediatrics, or family medicine). Medical students for years to come will benefit from the Young family’s generous support.
Congratulations on receiving the James R. and Lauri K. Young Scholarship
