Margaret Vanderwilt Lunsford Scholarship
Margaret Vanderwilt Lunsford was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 1911. She studied at the University of Iowa during the height of the Depression and received a B.S. degree in art in 1932. Although it was an unusual career choice for women of that era, Margaret dreamed of being a physician. With much determination and hard work, she earned an M.D. degree in 1941. She went on to complete a residency in anesthesia in 1943. From art to anesthesia!
Her career as an anesthesiologist spanned more than three decades. Dr. Lunsford retired in 1977. The following year, she married Carlton Lunsford, a retired stockbroker, and they moved to Clearwater, Florida. She never forgot her home state or her alma mater and continued to contribute generously to the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine up unto her death in 1994.
Although details of Dr. Lunsford’s professional career are few, it is apparent that she highly valued the education she received at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
Dr. Lunsford created the Margaret Vanderwilt Lunsford Scholarship Fund through the University of Iowa Foundation in 1985. The fund provides scholarships for students in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine who are pursing a career in the field of anesthesiology.
Congratulations on receiving the Margaret Vanderwilt Lunsford Scholarship
