Merlin G. and Ruth A. Osborn Scholarship
Merlin G. Osborn, M.D., was born in Waukon, Iowa, on February 20, 1937. He grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduated from:
˜ Dubuque Senior High in 1955
˜ the University of Dubuque in 1959
˜ the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1963
Dr. Osborn’s career included the following:
˜ Interned at San Bernardino County Charity Hospital in California (1963-1964)
˜ Served as a general medical officer at Mt. Home Air Force Base in Idaho (1964-1966)
˜ Returned to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for his anesthesia residency (1966-1968)
˜ Practiced anesthesia at both St. Luke’s Hospital and Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids until his retirement in 1995
˜ Served as president of the Iowa Society of Anesthesiologists and on many committees of both hospitals in Cedar Rapids
Ruth A. (Speckhardt) Osborn was born in Quincy, Illinois, October 9, 1938, and lived on a farm just south of Quincy. She graduated from Payson-Seymour High School in 1956 and the University of Iowa College of Nursing with a B.S.N. in 1960.
Mrs. Osborn worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for three years after graduation. Merlin and Ruth were married in 1963. They had two children, Daniel Osborn and Suzanne Weinstein. It was the Osborns’ wish that their scholarship be given in alternating years to a medical student and a nursing student.
