Michael and Susan Wall Scholarship
The Wall Scholarship Fund was established by a generous gift from Martin A. Podolsky in April 2002. Mr. Podolsky was grateful for the care he received at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and he realized the importance of scholarship support for students during their medical school careers.
Mr. Podolsky, born in Flint, Michigan, in 1926, retired from a life-long career in retailing and passed away in April 2006. Mr. Podolsky served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946, and attended the University of Michigan as a freshman. He then studied at Wayne State for a year and completed his undergraduate education at New York University in New York City, receiving his B.S. degree in retailing from the School of Commerce.
His work experience began even before his college years, when, at the young age of 9, he worked for his parents in their retail store in Flint, Michigan—the Martin Dry Goods Company. The business continued until Mr. Podolsky closed the store 53 years later! Mr. Podolsky’s hobbies were traveling, people, and reading.
His primary reason for establishing the Wall Scholarship was to help young medical students through school who could not otherwise afford the financial commitment. Mr. Podolsky asked that a freshman medical student be the initial recipient so the scholarship can be renewed each year through the four years of medical school with the stipulation that the student remains in good academic standing. The intent for following one student through the entire four years of medical school is to enable the student to focus more on education and training rather than monetary concerns.
Mr. Podolsky also wanted to honor his nephew Michael Wall and his wife Susan Dale Wall for their accomplishments as medical professionals. Dr. Michael Wall is a professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and Dr. Susan Dale Wall is a dermatologist in a private practice. Both Michael and Susan have B.S. and M.D. degrees—Michael graduated from Tulane University, and Susan graduated from the University of Missouri.
As a tribute to your dedication and commitment to earn your medical degree and establish yourself as a medical professional, you have been entrusted with the honor of being a recipient of the Wall Scholarship Fund.
Congratulations on receiving the Michael and Susan Wall Scholarship
