Susan M. Clifton Medical Scholarship
Susan “Susie” M. Clifton was passionate about learning. She was an avid reader and outstanding student who would be proud of her legacy in helping other students succeed.
Born in 1952, Susie graduated from University High School in Iowa City in 1969 and had just completed her first semester at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, when an automobile accident took her life in 1970.
Her parents, Dr. James A. and Katherine Rathe Clifton, initially established a fund through the University of Iowa Foundation in 1970 to receive gifts in their daughter’s memory, and the contributions were used to help purchase books for students with financial need. In 1996, the Cliftons made a generous gift to this fund and renamed it the Susan M. Clifton Achievement Scholarship. They renamed it again in 2002 when they made another significant investment in the fund and established it as the Susan M. Clifton Medical Scholarship Fund—to be awarded annually to a qualifying University of Iowa medical student.
The Cliftons intend this fund to not only memorialize Susie and her achievements, but also to inspire other students like her in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
Dr. Clifton is a UI Roy J. Carver Professor Emeritus who completed his residency and fellowship training in internal medicine at the UI after graduating from Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1947. He went on to become chief of the UI Division of Gastroenterology from 1955 to 1971 and, eventually, head of the UI Department of Internal Medicine. Barely a year after his retirement in 1990, Dr. Clifton returned at the request of President Rawlings as interim dean of the UI College of Medicine. He also spearheaded the UI Center for Digestive Diseases.
Susan’s mother, Katherine Rathe Clifton, is a UI graduate who received her B.A. degree in home economics in 1949. She and her husband had three daughters: Katherine, Caroline, and Susan.
In addition to establishing the Susan M. Clifton Medical Scholarship Fund, the Cliftons also support numerous other projects and programs at the University of Iowa, and they are members of the Presidents Club, which recognizes the UI’s most generous contributors.
The Cliftons hope their daughter’s love of learning will live on through the students who receive her scholarship and that they will, one day, make significant contributions to health care.
Congratulations on receiving the Susan M. Clifton Medical Scholarship
