Lieutenant Colonel James Mathey Huebsch and Dorothy Moore Huebsch Scholarship
Lieutenant Colonel James Mathey Huebsch (1940, B. A.) was born, the second of five siblings, and raised in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Jim graduated from Ft. Dodge High School after which he attended Iowa Central Community College for two years. Following community college, he attended the University of Iowa earning his Bachelor of Arts degree while working in the pharmacology laboratory to pay for his education. Jim had considered attending medical school however he could not afford the tuition nor could he obtain a teaching position, so he enlisted in the Army Air Core that fall.
Dorothy Moore Huebsch was reared in Warrenton, Missouri. After graduating from Warrenton High School she attended Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton during it’s last year of operation. She then attended McKendree Liberal Arts College in Illinois for a year. Dorothy was an accomplished pianist, giving recitals and accompanying choral groups while attending both colleges.
Jim and Dorothy met while he was stationed at Scott Field and she was attending McKendree. They maintained contact and married three years later after his return from overseas duty during WWII. He served with the 98th Bombardment Group. During this duty assignment, he contracted hepatitis and spent six months recovering in a British hospital in Italy. Here he developed a great appreciation for nurses and their profession, thanks to the excellent care he received.
Jim continued his Air Force career in the communications and electronics divisions for 20 years. His final assignment was to Lowery Air Base in Denver. Upon his retirement from military service he continued the same work as a civil service employee. Dorothy enjoyed their many assignments state side and the one in Newfoundland. She always located a Methodist Church near by where she often taught Sunday school and volunteered. Dorothy established the library at Grace United Methodist Church in Denver and dedicated over 35 years as the librarian there. It has been named the Dorothy M. Huebsch Memorial Library.
Jim and Dorothy were married for almost 70 years before her passing early in 2015. They were devoted to each other and were life long learners. Both enjoyed reading and were interested in staying abreast of current events. They were always supportive of family and friends who showed an interest in education and encouraged them to attain a college degree, believing it was the basis and support for a successful life.
Congratulations on receiving the Lieutenant Colonel James Mathey Huebsch and Dorothy Moore Huebsch Scholarship
