Mary M. Pugh Memorial Scholarship
Mary M. Pugh was born on April 6, 1918 on the family farm west of North English, Iowa. She was the third of six children of William Mabel (Feldeverd) Wagner. Educated in a one-room elementary school, she graduated from Vinton High School at the age of 16. After high school, she enrolled in the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa. Graduating in 1938, she became registered in the practice of nursing the same year.
While at the University she met and later married Joseph Pugh, a student from Iowa City. Together they raised three sons and one daughter. After moving to California in 1962, Mary continued her nursing career for over 40 years in various capacities and retired in 1980 from a supervisory position in Student Health Services at Cal Poly Pomona. Mary was respected by all who knew her and will always be remembered as a beloved matriarch. She and Joe made many friends wherever they went. Mary loved golf and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Mary M. Pugh Memorial Scholarship was established by Joseph B. Pugh, Jr., and Sherry Pugh in memory of Joseph’s mother.
