Pearl Zemlicka Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Pearl Zemlicka Memorial Scholarship was established in 1987 in honor of Pearl S. Zemlicka. Pearl was a professor in the University of Iowa College of Nursing from 1951 to 1974.
Pearl was born on June 11, 1907, in Kimball, South Dakota, to Frank and Clara Matousek Zemlicka. She earned her nursing degree in 1931 from Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines. In 1952, she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing education from Loyola University, and later received her master’s degree in education from the University of Iowa.
After earning her master’s at the UI, Pearl became an assistant professor in the UI College of Nursing, where she worked until her retirement in 1974. During her tenure, she also serve as director for continuing education in the College of Nursing.
Pearl was active in several organizations, including the American and Iowa Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau. She was a charter member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and a member of Questers, Pilots Club, American Association of University Women, Business and Professional Women, AARP, Quilters Club, and Goodwill Industries. She was a volunteer for Iowa City Hospice, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and Hotline and was a tour guide at the Old Capitol. She was also active with the Elderhostel, the Red Cross Board and Blood Programs, and Meals on Wheels.
