Suzanne Marek Lagina Nursing Scholarship
Suzanne (Marek) Lagina was raised in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Regis High School. Upon graduation, she enrolled in the University of Iowa and earned her B.S.N. degree from the UI College of Nursing in 1968. She fondly remembers her classes at Westlawn and meeting the college’s former dean, Laura Dustan.
After earning her degree, Suzanne moved to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan, where she received her master’s degree in medical-surgical nursing. Her thesis research project focused on developing the first nursing based computer program, which evaluated a patient’s anxiety levels before surgery.
Once she earned her master’s, she and her husband, Ken, moved to South Carolina. She began teaching nursing fundamentals at the University of South Carolina, where she established the first audio-tutorial lab for the university. She later worked as a clinical nurse specialist before working in her husband’s orthodontist practice. When Ken passed away suddenly in 2003, Suzanne helped transition his business to the new owner, and moved to North Carolina to work as a clinical nurse on the Clinical Research Unit at Duke University.
In 2014, Suzanne moved to Iowa City to be closer to her family in Cedar Rapids and Chicago. Although, Suzanne is active in a number of volunteer organizations—including the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Concierge Department, Mercy Hospital, Hope Lodge, Crisis Center Food Bank, and the Senior Center—her primary philanthropic interest is education, which she believes is the most important gift you can give someone.
Congratulations on receiving the Suzanne Marek Lagina Nursing Scholarship
