Dr. and Mrs. William L. Alcorn Scholarship
One family’s commitment to helping others still lives on through students in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Thanks to the Dr. and Mrs. William L. Alcorn Scholarship Fund, which Helen Alcorn Cressey established in her parents’ memory in 1983, UI medical students can afford to make a difference in the world.
Helen worked for many years as a social worker in Pennsylvania, where she lived with her husband, Ralph. She earned her B.A. degree in commerce and science from the University of Iowa in 1936 before going on to obtain her M.S.W. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943.
The Cresseys were longtime supporters of the UI and avid Hawkeye fans. After retiring in California, they began looking for ways to support the institutions that had given them so much. By establishing the Dr. and Mrs. William L. Alcorn Scholarship Fund, they will help numerous qualified medical students continue their studies despite otherwise insurmountable financial obstacles.
Helen maintained an intense interest in this fund and in the students it supported until her death in 1994. Now her family’s legacy will continue through the commitment of students like you.
Congratulations on receiving the Dr. and Mrs. William L. Alcorn Scholarship
