Dr. Frederic G. Loomis Scholarship
With UI connections on almost every branch of her family tree, Louise M. Loomis made arrangements for a generous estate gift to The University of Iowa.
Louise Loomis was born in 1923 and grew up in Waterloo, Iowa. Her father and her brother were involved in management of the Waterloo Courier. She attended Wells College, Aurora, New York, and graduated from the UI in 1946 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
She married Richard E. McKinstry, who graduated from the UI with a B.S.C. degree in 1947. He was killed in 1951 during the Korean War. They had two children, Michael McKinstry and Jane McKinstry. Mrs. Loomis established the Richard E. McKinstry Business Scholarship Fund for students in the University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie College of Business.
Her second husband, Frederic G. Loomis, received his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in 1938 and an M.D. in 1940, both from the UI. Dr. Loomis was a physician in Waterloo. He died in 1994.
Dr. Loomis’s first wife was Jessie Loomis, who earned a master’s degree in art from the UI in 1940. They had three children: John F. Loomis, who graduated from the UI with a bachelor’s degree in 1969 and now lives in Iowa City, Iowa; Leslie E. Vansen, who earned a bachelor’s degree in 1967 from the UI and lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Rebecca Loomis, who earned a bachelor’s degree in 1971 from UNI and lives in Cohasset, Minnesota.
John Loomis said his father always valued his medical school experience and training at the UI and wanted to provide the same kind of opportunity for students who graduated from Iowa
Mrs. Loomis spent her winters near Sarasota, Florida. She died of cancer in 1998. Her thoughtful planning will make a difference to UI students for years to come.
Congratulations on receiving the Dr. Frederic G. Loomis Scholarship
