Richard Damstrom Medical Scholarship
Scholarship support for University of Iowa students comes in many forms, from many sources. In Iowa, where the state’s identity is tied to the land, gifts of real estate often stand for much more than the sum of the proceeds they garner through sale or lease.
For a farmer like Richard Damstrom, the land was an even more precious gift. Following his untimely death in a house fire in 1995, Richard’s farm and a collection of his personal items became the foundation for the Richard Damstrom Medical Scholarship Fund.
Richard, who was born in 1911, became interested in music at an early age, and without the benefit of any formal instruction, became a master of many musical instruments. Over a period of 55 years, he played in many bands, some of which were his own. He was a lifelong Iowa resident, farming in Elk Grove and Garfield townships, and he married his wife, Ruby, in 1943.
This farmer’s generous gift of support is continuing proof of the bounty of the land he cherished.
Congratulations on receiving the Richard Damstrom Medical Scholarship
