Tewfik Student Aid Award
A native of Alexandria, Egypt, Dr. Ferial Abbassy-Tewfik received her M.D. from the University of Alexandria in 1964, a Diploma in Medical Radiology from the same institution in 1968, and her Ph.D. in Radiation Biology from the University of Iowa in 1976. Dr. Ferial completed a fellowship in radiation oncology at the UI in 1984 and for two years was an assistant professor with the UI Division of Radiation Therapy.
Her husband, Dr. Hamed Hassan Tewfik, is also a graduate of the University of Alexandria (M.D. 1959; Diploma in Radiology 1962; Ph.D. 1967). From 1972 to 1984, he was a professor in the UI’s Department of Radiology, where he also served as director of the Division of Radiation Oncology.
Both of the Tewfiks’ children are UI graduates. Sherif received his B.S. degree in biology in 1989 and Shahira completed a B.B.A. degree in marketing in 1991. Sherif went on to complete medical school at his parents’ alma mater, the University of Alexandria, and now is an anesthesiologist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Shahira took an advanced degree from the American University in Cairo and is a researcher in Washington, D.C.. In 1985, Hamed and Ferial established their own private practice in radiation oncology in Iowa City.
The Tewfiks have maintained their commitment to the UI and to the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. They know well how costly medical education is. Hamed said, “We thought the best way to give something back to the University would be to help medical students in need.”
The Tewfik Student Aid Fund, established through the University of Iowa Foundation in 1987, is a permanent endowment which provides one or more annual scholarships for students in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
Congratulations on receiving the Tewfik Student Aid Award
