William D. Rose Scholarship
Dr. William D. Rose of Los Angeles created the William D. Rose Scholarship Fund through a generous gift of real estate to the University of Iowa Foundation. This scholarship will benefit qualified students for years to come.
Dr. Rose’s recognition of the value of student financial assistance grew out of his own first-hand experiences of struggle and hardship. His parents immigrated to the United States from Belarus in the former Soviet Union. The family built a new life in Sioux City, Iowa. Their success in meeting the challenges of such an upheaval can perhaps best be measured through the achievements of their son. Bill received his B.A. degree in biochemistry from Morningside College in 1936 and then completed his M.D. degree at the University of Iowa in 1939. Following an internship and residency at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco, Dr. Rose joined the U.S. Armed Forces. He fought in World War II and endured three years as a prisoner of war.
Following the war, he returned to the U.S. and began a urology residency at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles County Hospital. Dr. Rose retired from practice and lived in Los Angeles, California, where he shared his experience at the University of Southern California College of Medicine as an emeritus professor until his death in 2004.
Congratulations on receiving the William D. Rose Scholarship
