$250,000 gift from University of Iowa alumni couple to advance international study

April 9, 2014

Gift contributes to For Iowa. Forever More: The Campaign for the University of Iowa

A $250,000 gift to the University of Iowa Foundation from Carl W. and Claire Field Stuart, of Austin, Texas, will provide international study opportunities for students at the University of Iowa. The gift—which will help advance For Iowa. Forever More., the UI’s $1.7 billion comprehensive campaign—will establish the Claire and Carl Stuart Study Abroad Scholarship Fund, which will support international travel experiences for undergraduate juniors in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS).

“Claire and I traveled to Peru shortly after graduation, and that was a transformational experience for us,” says Carl Stuart. ”We want UI students to have that same opportunity.”

“You see the world differently when you spend time in another culture,” says Claire. “You see the similarities, which helps create less of a ‘them and us’ feeling about other cultures. The experience changed our lives.”

University of Iowa President Sally Mason says the Stuarts’ gift will help Iowa provide valuable global experiences for students. “At Iowa, part of our mission is to prepare students to be citizens and leaders of a global society,” says Mason. “Gifts like this will help us provide students with valuable real-world experiences and international understanding.”

Previous support from the Stuarts includes a gift in 2003 to establish the Carl W. and Claire Field Stuart CLAS Excellence and Innovation Fund, which provides discretionary money to be used by the dean to distribute to CLAS departments for creative, new programs.

Dean Chaden Djalali of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences hails the Stuarts’ dedication to CLAS students.

“Carl and Claire Stuart understand that one of the most important elements of a 21st-century education is the exploration of diverse cultures,” says Djalali, “and that studying abroad is the best way to truly immerse oneself in the life and language of another country and become a global citizen. Carl and Claire are good friends of our college and our students, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their visionary support.”

The Stuarts, who are from Iowa—Carl from Keokuk, Claire from Waterloo—met while they were students at the UI. Carl Stuart earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the UI in 1969 and now owns a successful investment management company in Austin, Texas. He also has hosted “Money Talk,” a popular weekly call-in show on Austin’s KLBJ radio, for nearly two decades, and he teaches courses in financial and investment planning at the University of Texas. He currently serves on the University of Iowa Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Claire Stuart received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the UI in 1969. She took time off from teaching elementary school to raise their three children before earning a master’s degree in counseling from Texas State University. She went on to work as a counselor specializing in the treatment of adolescents, and is now retired. She currently serves on the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Advisory Board.

Currently, Carl and Claire Stuart are serving as co-chairs for the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ portion of For Iowa. Forever More., a leadership role that Lynette Marshall, president and CEO of the UI Foundation, says continues the Stuarts’ longstanding commitment to their alma mater.

“Claire and Carl are visionary philanthropists and great friends of the university,” says Marshall. “Their dedication to the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, reflected in both their giving and their campaign leadership, is of immeasurable benefit to students and faculty.”
