Class of 2017
“What I am able to do as a student is all thanks to the support I have received from donors.”
Lexie Finer of Iowa City, IA, is no stranger to university involvement. During her time at the University of Iowa, Finer has taken part in a number of student organizations and volunteer opportunities thanks to private support.
Finer is a Presidential Scholar and recipient of the Albert and Mildred Lindsay Scholarship, which recognizes outstanding high school seniors. Because of the support she has received from this scholarship, Finer is able to spend time on activities she is passionate about instead of working to pay for her schooling. With this extra time she has been able to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, mentor youth through Children of Promise, an organization geared towards helping at-risk youth, and actively participate in the UI Honors Program. She also has spent two years conducting research at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the pediatric neurology lab, something she wouldn’t have been able to do without her scholarship. The experience that has pushed her the most, though, is her position as vice president of membership for the Student Philanthropy Group (SPG), a student organization that works to share the importance of giving back with other Hawkeyes.
“It is a great feeling to be able to focus my time on my schooling and involvement while in college and not worry about working to pay it off,” said Finer.
Outside of her extra-curricular activities, Finer is a health and human physiology major on the pre-med track. She hopes to attend the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and eventually work in the pediatrics field. As a person who has a passion for mentoring, Finer was attracted to the program because of its reputation as a respected teaching hospital.
“Generous donors have really helped create opportunities for me that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise,” said Finer. “I am thankful that I have been able to meet many of them through SPG and tell them how inspiring they are!”
