Art & Write Night
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (CDT)
Where: 39-53 East Jefferson Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Join the long, rich, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.

Professional, aspiring, and amateur artists alike, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History's magical gallery spaces after-hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists.

Tell a friend, grab a notebook, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We'll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we'll always start in Mammal Hall on the third Floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We'll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we've been working on, connecting with others (optional, of course!).

Please note, the Museum is typically closed during this time, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall. Mammal Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor of the building.

Special thanks to Blick Art Materials for supplying extra art materials. Make sure to check in with us in Mammal Hall to check out a variety of special art tools and supplies.

Stanley Sage | Framing My Life Through Others Art with Pete Hartley
10:30 am - 11:30 am (CDT)
Where: 160 West Burlington Street, Iowa City, IA US 52242

Join us for the latest session of Stanley Sage, a program designed for older adults. This session will feature Pete Hartley, owner of The Frame Station (since 2023) in Iowa City, as he talks about his unique journey and passion for framing art. Pete will share how his love for the craft has quite literally "framed" his life, from early woodworking projects to becoming a cornerstone of the local art community.

This program will be hosted by Amanda Lensing. Light refreshments will be provided by the Barbara and Richard Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence.

About Pete Hartley
My journey into framing started with the purchase of our house and a circular saw. I learned quickly that I loved to build things, continuing to push my skills further. I built cabinets and vanities, a shed, a 200 square foot addition, a climbing wall, and a hidden door that leads to a large closet. I got my start in framing when I purchased framing equipment in 2019 from my great-aunt and uncle who were retiring from their small operation in Northern Minnesota. I renovated my garage to have a workshop and started framing, initially as a way to supplement my income while being a bicycle mechanic, however. with the onset of Covid, I left the bike shop to take care of my children and continued to frame from home. My love for framing quickly grew the more time I spent in the shop. In 2023, a friend connected me with the original owners of The Frame Station in Iowa City, who were looking to retire. It was the perfect fit for all of us and I am grateful and proud to have taken ownership and enjoy the ways it has helped me grow my skills even further.

I view framing as a craft, with a touch of art. Sometimes, the best way to display or preserve a piece of art is to take a very creative approach. I believe that artwork asks and expects to be preserved for longevity in a way that adds to or draws out the beauty of the art itself. I love the way framing pushes my brain and allows me to come up with solutions that combine all the elements needed to accomplish this. Framing for my community has been a great joy.

A first-generation student from small-town beginnings finds community and success at Iowa. PHOTO: John Emigh Hawkeye Marching Band section leader Clayton Garmon reflects on navigating the first-generation college experience and looks forward to a promising engineering career. Clayton Garmon (24BSE) grew up in the 100-person town of Floris, Iowa, thinking more about the family farm than college. However, his parents saw his growing passion for the sciences and encouraged him to explore what life could look like with a degree. This led Garmon through the complicated college application process. He navigated surprise fees, complex finances, and confusing requirements—and after being accepted to the University of Iowa, he did it all again while applying for financial aid and coordinating his living arrangements. “The most difficult thing was looking at the different aid packages,” Garmon says. “It was confusing, but Iowa’s financial aid department helped me straighten it out.” His next challenge was making the move from a small farming town to the constant noise and action of Iowa City. He felt overwhelmed by its sheer size—and by the prospect of meeting so many strangers—after being around familiar faces his whole life. “My family had been in Floris for generations,” says Garmon. “Taking that step forward, and leaving them behind, was daunting.” Despite those fears, he quickly discovered a love for Iowa City’s many offerings and events. He also found community, close friendships, and unforgettable experiences through his involvement in the Hawkeye Marching Band. “The Hawkeye Marching Band was my family, and my happy place was on the field at Kinnick,” he says. As he adjusted to college life, Garmon took advantage of Iowa’s First Gen Hawks program, which connected him to a variety of campus resources—everything from tutoring services to student health—that helped him succeed in and out of the classroom. In addition, he led the Hawkeye Marching Band’s sousaphone section and completed several engineering internships. These opportunities prepared him for his current role in crafting sustainable energy solutions as a mechanical engineer at Design Engineers, of Madison, Wis. He also is pursuing a master’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. “I felt like a whole new person after being at the University of Iowa,” he says. “It helped me step into leadership roles and become confident in myself.”
