100-Word Microstory Contest Winner, Grades 3 & 4
A chocolate-colored cat lay on a windowsill, watching a field of flowers.
Ruby tulips stood alongside aquamarine poppies, bright against the emerald grass. A sparrow swooped down and then soared into the sapphire sky, flying up towards the double rainbow high above. The sparrow touched the amethyst layer, wetting the tip of its wing. It followed the arch for some time, then dropped below the clouds to see a carnival below, bold and colorful beside the gray roads surrounding it.
The bird swept down once more and landed on a tree bedecked with ribbons. The cat smiled in its sleep.
