Microstory Contest Winner - Grades 5 & 6 (Prompt B)


I watched as the couple walked in, taking an empty booth in the corner. Sighing, I shifted closer behind the wall so they wouldn’t see me. The air was crisp and clear, and their laughs sounded so bright and lovely. Her smile was warm, and he seemed so in love. I watched them chat, knowing that they thought they were completely alone. It was quiet besides their endless chatter and the singing radio. I felt invisible, watching the couple jealously as they finally left and my stomach dropped down to my feet. Why couldn’t I have that?
