Safeguarding and Disclosure of Confidential Information

The University of Iowa Center for Advancement maintains information on many alumni, donor and friends of the University of Iowa, including reports documenting donor giving records and other financial information, contacts, philanthropic interests, and engagement and cultivation strategies. This information is considered confidential, internal work product, and vital to our business objectives. For alumni, donors, and friends to support our mission, we recognize they must feel fully comfortable that personal confidences and private circumstances shared with our organization will be professionally and appropriately preserved; and therefore, we make safeguarding this information one of our highest priorities.

The UI Center for Advancement does not sell any donor or alumni information. We may disclose limited information as is reasonably necessary to further our mission, and then only after appropriate safeguards are taken to preserve confidentiality (e.g., confidentiality agreements, etc.). The UI Center for Advancement may also disclose information in special cases when there is reason to believe that disclosing the information is necessary to identify, contact, or bring legal action against someone who may be causing injury or interference with (either intentionally or unintentionally) the rights or property of the UI Center for Advancement or to anyone else that could be harmed by such activities.

In addition, the UI Center for Advancement will disclose certain information upon request as may be required by law, including Chapter 22 of the Iowa Code (Examination of Public Records (Open Records)). If such a request involves identifying specific individuals (e.g., donors, alumni, etc.) and their personal information, the UI Center for Advancement will make a reasonable effort to contact the individual before disclosure whenever possible. Inquiries or requests for information, applying Open Records, should be directed to Dana Larson, Executive Director, Communications and Marketing, at 319-467-3661 or
