At 93 years young, Audrey Henry has a passion for literature and journalism that has kept her deeply involved in her community of Newberry, South Carolina, for more than 50 years. Henry is a leading volunteer and fundraiser for local organizations, including as a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes with the Iowa Club in Columbia, South Carolina.
Throughout her career as an English, journalism, and composition instructor and media specialist at high schools and community colleges, Henry encouraged students to embrace lifelong learning. She lives that legacy as a charter member and past president of the Friends of the Newberry County Library. Henry chairs the literary luncheon committee, leads book discussions, and assists with fundraising for this valued community asset.
Henry has been incredibly active in retirement. She is a frequent volunteer with local arts and health organizations, including the Newberry Fine Art Club, Newberry County Literacy Council, Newberry Opera House, and the Free Medical Clinic of Newberry County, where she also acted as the public relations representative. In her church, Henry teaches a Bible study class and fundraises for community members with special needs.
Henry shares her alma mater with her late husband, Gordon Henry (60MA), and their daughter, Laurie Henry (85MFA). With continued dedication to the community causes she loves, Henry demonstrates that her personal passions and Iowa values are as strong as ever seven decades later.
