Chat from the Old Cap: Legends of Downtown Iowa City
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm (CDT)

Join three University of Iowa graduates who are helping make Iowa City a destination for food and culture.

Chef Benjamin Smart (04BS) studied and worked at several restaurants, including serving as executive sous chef at an upscale eatery located outside of Seattle, before returning to Iowa City in 2013 to help open Big Grove Brewery in Solon, Iowa. From there, he went on to open Pullman Bar & Diner, Big Grove Brewery & Taproom, and St. Burch Tavern-all located in Iowa City. In 2017, he was highlighted by Plate magazine as one of 30 chefs to watch.

Bob Franklin (98BA) is the owner of Elray´s Live & Dive in downtown Iowa City. It is located in the space that was once Blue Moose, and before that, Que. Franklin is an Iowa native who currently lives in Nashville. He is also the CEO and part-owner of a popular live music joint called Tin Roof, which has 18 locations in 12 states.

Lesley Rish (10BA) is the founder of Dumpling Darling, a fast-casual fusion food restaurant inspired by dumplings and street food from around the world. Her creations focus on vegan and locally sourced items. After graduating from the University of Iowa, Rish lived and worked in South Korea where she discovered her love for dumplings. She returned to Iowa and started a farmers market stand in 2014, eventually opening a restaurant in downtown Iowa City in 2017.

Register to join these three Iowa City stars for this virtual event.

Chat from the Old Cap is a series of virtual engagement sessions featuring Iowa alumni and friends sharing stories from their careers, backgrounds, and the university that unites us.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a financial exigency which threatens our continued ability to adequately support 24 intercollegiate athletics programs at the desired championship level. With the Big Ten Conference's postponement of fall competition on August 11, UI Athletics now projects lost revenue of approximately $100M and an overall deficit between $60-75M this fiscal year. A loss of this magnitude will take years to overcome. We have a plan to recover, but the journey will be challenging. In that context, we are writing today with some extremely difficult news. In consultation with the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, we have made the decision to discontinue four of our varsity sports programs at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year: men's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's tennis. Each of these teams will have the opportunity to compete in their upcoming 2020-21 seasons, should the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 permit, before they are discontinued at the varsity level. Read the full announcement. If you have any questions about your Athletics donation, please call (319) 467-3410 or email?uiowa@foriowa.org.

Cheer on the Hawks with other fans in your area.
