Chat From the Old Cap: Transforming Television
12:00 pm (CDT)

Join two Iowa graduates and an award-winning TV power couple as they discuss how they have transformed modern-day television through their work as writers and producers for HBO´s mega-hit series The Sopranos.

Mitchell Burgess (78BA) and Robin Green (77MFA) have written and produced some of the most highly acclaimed television shows over the past two decades including The Sopranos, Blue Bloods, and Northern Exposure. Their work rejects standard tropes in favor of exceptional storytelling. Their dynamic work has been recognized by every major award in their field for their work.

The pair have crafted Emmy and Golden Globe winning tales throughout their distinguished careers and have remained loyal to the University of Iowa - which they say helped launched their personal and professional partnership.

Register today!

Jeff Lieberman, Assistant Vice President, Main Campus Development at the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, will host the couple during this riveting virtual conversation.

Chat from the Old Cap is a series of virtual engagement sessions featuring Iowa alumni and friends sharing stories from their careers, backgrounds, and the university that unites us.

Guests will also learn from leaders of the Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory about the vision for the prairie. Facilitators include University of Iowa Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Office of Sustainability and the Environment, UI WILD (Iowa Raptor Project, Iowa Wildlife Camps, and School of the Wild), UI Museum of Natural History, Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, Athletics, the Iowa City Science Booster Club, and visiting Interdisciplinary Evolutionary Sciences research students with additional support from the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a financial exigency which threatens our continued ability to adequately support 24 intercollegiate athletics programs at the desired championship level. With the Big Ten Conference's postponement of fall competition on August 11, UI Athletics now projects lost revenue of approximately $100M and an overall deficit between $60-75M this fiscal year. A loss of this magnitude will take years to overcome. We have a plan to recover, but the journey will be challenging. In that context, we are writing today with some extremely difficult news. In consultation with the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, we have made the decision to discontinue four of our varsity sports programs at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year: men's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's tennis. Each of these teams will have the opportunity to compete in their upcoming 2020-21 seasons, should the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 permit, before they are discontinued at the varsity level. Read the full announcement. If you have any questions about your Athletics donation, please call (319) 467-3410 or email?uiowa@foriowa.org.
