Where: 39-53 East Jefferson Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Celebrate Alumni Day with a visit to your Museum of Natural History! During a special portion of the day, from 10:00 a.m. - noon, drop-in for a "Rusty Celebration" honoring one of campus´s most beloved (and largest) icons: Rusty the Giant Sloth (our museum mascot and the alternative UI icon to Herky the Hawk).

Museum staff will share behind-the-scenes stories, recent discoveries, and the ongoing scientific work that keeps Rusty relevant far beyond the galleries. Stop by, say hello, and pick up a limited Rusty pin while supplies last. And don't miss the chance to take your obligatory Rusty selfie! Post it and tag us to be entered to win a special prize.

Our galleries will be open all day (10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) for self-guided exploration, too. Drop in anytime to reconnect with favorite exhibits, discover what´s new, and experience the natural and cultural history that continues to shape the University of Iowa.

Whether you´re reminiscing about your student days or discovering the museum anew, Alumni Day is the perfect time to celebrate Iowa pride-past, present, and prehistoric.

Please note, the Pentacrest Museums offerings are part of the greater Alumni Day efforts organized by the UI Center for Advancement. UICA asks alumni to register for participation HERE.

Forum Website & Sessions Schedule

Audiences can expect engaging panels on topics ranging from food and music to friendship, romance, and sports - paired with Q&As featuring international speakers. This event invites anyone interested in global Jewish cinemas, storytelling, or cross-cultural dialogue to explore how films help us laugh together, learn together, and imagine more connected futures.

On the final day of the forum, will be the 2026 Joel Barkan Memorial Lecture.

Joel Barkan retired from the University of Iowa in 2005, after a career as a political science professor and the founding director of the Center for International and Comparative Studies (CICS), the predecessor to UI International Programs. Following his retirement, Barkan went on to have a second career in Washington, D.C., as a consultant with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), the World Bank, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Many of the university´s faculty, staff, and administrators knew him also as a creative program-builder who made lasting contributions to international studies at the university and to the regular discussion in Iowa City of changing political, economic, and social circumstances in the world. UI faculty members who were his colleagues and who teach international studies proposed that Joel Barkan be recognized in a named annual campus lecture. The first annual Joel Barkan Memorial Lecture was given in 2015.

This year´s Provost´s Global Forum is made possible through the generous support and financial contributions from the Stanley-University of Iowa Foundation Support Organization, UI International Programs, the UI Old Capitol Museum, the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Perry A. and Helen Judy Bond Fund. Activities for the forum are hosted in collaboration with the UI Old Capitol Museum.

Art & Write Night
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (CST)
Where: 39-53 East Jefferson Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Join the long, rich, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.

Professional, aspiring, and amateur artists alike, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History's magical gallery spaces after-hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists.

Tell a friend, grab a notebook, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We'll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we'll always start in Bird Hall on the third Floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We'll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we've been working on, connecting with others (optional, of course!).

Please note, the Museum is typically closed during this time, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall, restrooms, stairs and elevator to the third floor galleries where this program takes place. Bird Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor of the building.

Special thanks to Blick Art Materials for supplying extra art materials. Make sure to check in with us in Bird Hall to check out a variety of special art tools and supplies.
