Art & Write Night
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (CST)
Where: 39-53 East Jefferson Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Join the long, rich, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.

Professional, aspiring, and amateur artists alike, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History's magical gallery spaces after-hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists.

Tell a friend, grab a notebook, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We'll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we'll always start in the Hageboeck Hall of Birds (Bird Hall) on the third Floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We'll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we've been working on, connecting with others (optional, of course!).

Please note, the Museum is typically closed during this time, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall. Bird Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor and crossing the auditorium to the north side of the building.

WorldCanvass: Connecting Iowa with the World and the World with Iowa
5:30 pm - 7:00 pm (CDT)

Join International Programs for a special WorldCanvass event entitled, "Connecting Iowa with the World and the World with Iowa." This event will be streamed virtually over Zoom.

View full program details and schedule

Iowa and Kosovo have enjoyed decades of international cooperation and are well-established sister states. Building upon that foundation, the University of Iowa (UI), Iowa State University (ISU), and the Kosova Education Center (KEC) are collaborating on a $4.7 million USAID-funded cooperative agreement (the Activity) to develop private sector partnerships that will strengthen higher education.

In the opening segment, WorldCanvass guests from Iowa and Kosovo will discuss how, through the Activity, they are working to strengthen partnerships between the private sector and academic institutions, and how they are supporting the development of market-oriented and experiential learning approaches in both the information and communication technology and agriculture sectors in Kosovo.

The program concludes with a celebration of UI Global Student Awardees Katherine Lyu and Amira Nash, whose extraordinary commitment to international education has enriched both the UI campus and Iowa's global reputation.

WorldCanvass is a production of International Programs. Programs are recorded as audio podcasts and are available on iTunes, the Public Radio Exchange (PRX), and the WorldCanvass website

Where: 21 North Clinton Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Rising seas, toxic rivers, deforestation, smoke-filled air-headlines remind us daily of the local, national, and international impacts of climate change. Join us for a wild pecha kucha ride through the effects of climate change with researchers who also tirelessly seek solutions. World-renowned climate scientist, Jerald Schnoor will open with big picture issues. That will set the stage for artist Isabel Barbuzza´s work on South American lithium salt mines, environmental literary scholar Eric Gidal´s work on Iowa´s watersheds, feminist anthropologist Meena Khandelwal´s engagement with Rajasthani villages in India, natural resource economist Silvia Secchi´s rooting into the farms and rivers that surround us, and atmospheric scientist and planning expert Scott Spak´s studies of the cities where we live. Together, our Wide Lens presenters offer crucial insights into the challenges we face and hope that if we work together, change is possible.

Presentations:

  • "Visualizing Climate Dangers-The Case of Lithium" - Isabel Barbuzza, Art and Art History, CLAS
  • "Connecting Data and Storytelling in Iowa's Watersheds" - Eric Gidal, English, CLAS
  • "Cookstoves and Climate Change in India" - Meena Khandelwal, Anthropology and Gender, Women´s, and Sexuality Studies, CLAS
  • "Climate Change-Where We Are Now" - Jerald Schnoor, College of Engineering
  • "Adapting Agriculture, Land, and Water to Climate Change" - Silvia Secchi, Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, CLAS

Additional Hosts - Roland Racevskis, Associate Dean for the Arts and Humanities, CLAS; Kristy Nabhan-Warren, Associate Vice President for Research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

For each gathering in the Wide Lens series, researchers, scholars, and artists from across the university briefly present their work on a shared topic of interest; then, we open the floor to questions and conviviality over hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

Wide Lens is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, and the Office of the Vice President for Research. These events are free and open to all.

The Hawkeyes then tied the game with a pair of field goals from Drew Stevens, including a season-long strike of 53 yards. Late into the fourth quarter, star defensive back and punt returner Cooper DeJean would give Iowa a 23-16 lead following an electric 70-yard punt return touchdown. Iowa would kick one more field goal to increase the lead to 26-16, sealing the win for the Hawkeyes. There goes that man!! @cdejean23 x #Hawkeyes pic.twitter.com/g6rfgRSY5V? In the last game of the regular season, Iowa played Nebraska on Black Friday. After going into the fourth quarter tied at 10-10, the Hawkeyes continued their trend of late-game heroics and found a way to win when it mattered most. After a turnover gave the Huskers the ball with under a minute left, the Hawkeyes made three crucial plays with under 20 seconds left. The first was an interception from defensive lineman Ethan Hurkett with just 15 seconds left in the game. On the next play, Iowa handed it off to Leshon Williams, and he scampered 22 yards to Iowa in field goal range. The final play of the game would come from an unlikely source. Iowa's backup kicker, Marshall Meeder, would attempt his first kick of the season. Earlier in this game, Nebraska blocked two field goal attempts from Drew Stevens, which influenced the decision to put in the backup for a potential game-winning kick. Sure enough, Meeder made the field goal that gave Iowa its 10th win of the season. The Pick. The Kick. @ethan_H116 x @Meeder23 #Hawkeyes pic.twitter.com/qDooviv7H0?
