Art & Write Night
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (CST)
Where: 39-53 East Jefferson Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Join the long, rich, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.

Professional, aspiring, and amateur artists alike, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History's magical gallery spaces after-hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists.

Tell a friend, grab a notebook, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We'll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we'll always start in the Hageboeck Hall of Birds (Bird Hall) on the third Floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We'll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we've been working on, connecting with others (optional, of course!).

Please note, the Museum is typically closed during this time, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall. Bird Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor and crossing the auditorium to the north side of the building.

Where: 21 North Clinton Street, Iowa City, IA US 52240

Rising seas, toxic rivers, deforestation, smoke-filled air-headlines remind us daily of the local, national, and international impacts of climate change. Join us for a wild pecha kucha ride through the effects of climate change with researchers who also tirelessly seek solutions. World-renowned climate scientist, Jerald Schnoor will open with big picture issues. That will set the stage for artist Isabel Barbuzza´s work on South American lithium salt mines, environmental literary scholar Eric Gidal´s work on Iowa´s watersheds, feminist anthropologist Meena Khandelwal´s engagement with Rajasthani villages in India, natural resource economist Silvia Secchi´s rooting into the farms and rivers that surround us, and atmospheric scientist and planning expert Scott Spak´s studies of the cities where we live. Together, our Wide Lens presenters offer crucial insights into the challenges we face and hope that if we work together, change is possible.

Presentations:

  • "Visualizing Climate Dangers-The Case of Lithium" - Isabel Barbuzza, Art and Art History, CLAS
  • "Connecting Data and Storytelling in Iowa's Watersheds" - Eric Gidal, English, CLAS

  • "Climate Change-Where We Are Now" - Jerald Schnoor, College of Engineering
  • "Adapting Agriculture, Land, and Water to Climate Change" - Silvia Secchi, Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, CLAS
  • "City Planning for the Environment, Climate, and Energy" - Scott Spak, School of Planning and Public Affairs, Graduate College

Additional Hosts - Roland Racevskis, Associate Dean for the Arts and Humanities, CLAS; Kristy Nabhan-Warren, Associate Vice President for Research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

For each gathering in the Wide Lens series, researchers, scholars, and artists from across the university briefly present their work on a shared topic of interest; then, we open the floor to questions and conviviality over hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

Wide Lens is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, and the Office of the Vice President for Research. These events are free and open to all.

The $31-million Goschke Family Wrestling Training Center takes shape next to Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

This roundup of historic covers offers a peek into the University of Iowa publication's past.

Gary and Judy Hested love the Hawkeyes, and they show their love by making contributions to the I-Club and supporting a scholarship that benefits women's basketball student-athletes. Gary Hested (72BBA) understands the importance of supporting scholarships, in part, because he funded his own education at the University of Iowa. "I paid my way through school by saving throughout high school, working summer construction jobs in the Dakotas, and pumping gas in Coralville," says Gary, who lives in Story City, Iowa, with his wife, Judy. "Even a small amount of additional money can make a big difference." The Hesteds created the Gary and Judy Hested Family Athletic Scholarship so that they could help fellow Hawkeyes receive a high-quality Iowa education. To date, five women's basketball student-athletes?Carly Mohns (18BS), Tania Davis (19BA), Alexis Sevillian (20BA), Monika Czinano, and Kate Martin?have received their scholarship. "Each year we're invited to practice and then lunch with the team afterwards," says Judy Hested (72BA). "It's been nice to go to lunch and see what they're like off the court. We're always curious to talk to them about their goals in life‐beyond their athletics endeavors." The Hesteds have been Hawkeye fans since their childhoods?Gary in Lohrville, Iowa, and Judy in Eldridge and Burlington, Iowa. While at the University of Iowa, they created fond memories of cheering on the Iowa football team, as well as the Big Ten-championship winning men's basketball team in 1970. "I grew up with the Hawkeyes, and I have always been a sports fan," says Judy. "I got to watch Fred Brown, Downtown Freddie Brown, in both Burlington and at the University of Iowa. Those were some wonderful teams to watch." Once the Hesteds graduated from Iowa and moved around the state?Gary working in finance and banking and Judy in health care?they stayed connected to Iowa through season tickets for men's basketball and football, as well as yearly contributions to the I-Club. They're proud to continue to support the Hawkeyes in any way possible. "We started out supporting Iowa athletics as soon as we could afford it," says Gary, who continues to work as chairman and CEO of Exchange State Bank in Ames. "And it kind of grew from there. We have choices when it comes to what we support. As Coach Hayden Fry said, athletics is the front porch to the university, and we know that we want Iowa athletics to continue to succeed."
